Jean-François Millet (1814-1875) was a French painter best known for his depictions of peasant farmers. His works are considered part of the naturalism and realism movements. He was one of the founders of the Barbizon school whose artists focused more on creating realistic works of art, rather than the more popular romantic style of the day. The French landscape was a popular them of the Barbizon school. Many of Millet’s works involve field workers, but he also created a number of portraits and interior scenes.
