Every holiday has a specific set of colors associated with it. For Thanksgiving, those colors are warm, rich, and comforting. The main colors associated with the Thanksgiving holiday include:
- Red
- Gold/yellow
- Brown
- Orange
Each of these colors symbolizes something unique and, when used together, immediately bring Thanksgiving to mind. If you’ve ever wondered what these colors symbolize, read on.
The History of Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November. History stated, “In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states.” Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday 1863 by Abraham Lincoln. The colors most closely associated with Thanksgiving–red, brown, yellow, and orange–were most likely derived from the harvest feast of 1621.
The Meaning of Thanksgiving’s Colors
Every color represents something. Here are a few interpretations of what Thanksgiving’s colors represent…
- Red symbolizes fallen leaves. (This can also be true of brown or gold.) It also represents passion, anger, and other intense emotions.
- Brown symbolizes wheat. It is a color representing bounty and the fruitfulness of the earth, as well as physical health. It is comforting and grounding, and is a common color used in Thanksgiving decor.
- Yellow/gold symbolizes corn. Of course, corn comes in a rainbow of colors, but is most closely associated with a golden yellow. Fall Colors and Their Associated Emotions stated, “Yellow is most often associated with happiness. The color of the sun is used to evoke pleasant, cheerful and optimistic feelings. Royal yellow, as it’s a rich shade, and golden yellow, a warm and bright shade, are the most fitting shades of yellow to use during autumn.”
- Orange represents fall’s harvest. It also is associated with joy and other positive emotions, and is also commonly associated with Halloween.
