What is your favorite piece of artwork? The Mona Lisa? The Last Supper? The Creation of Adam? Starry Night? Whatever it is, it says a whole lot about you. Your favorite work of art reveals more than just your artistic preferences; it bares your soul.
The Huffington Post recently published a fascinating article, What Your Favorite Artwork Says About You, on the correlation between artistic preference and personality. The article discussed several specific works of art that are well loved, and what each piece implies about those who favor it. What Your Favorite Artwork Says About You delves into Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss, Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night, Edvard Munch’s The Scream, and Frida Kahlo’s portraits, among other pieces. Would you consider any of these pieces of art to be your favorite? If so, read on to find out more about yourself.
The Kiss by Gustav Klimt Bears your Soul
Ah, The Kiss. Romantic, seductive, and provocative, prints of this piece of artwork grace the walls of thousands of homes. Those who are drawn to The Kiss are first and foremost romantics. They tend to be idealists who perhaps become easily dissatisfied with the monotony of everyday life. On the upside, these people see life through rose-colored glasses and are very creative. Is this true of you?
Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night has gained unparalleled popularity in the past several decades. This piece is mesmerizing and can pull one out of a boring workday and into a world of wonder. Speaking to those who love this piece of art, the Huffington Post article mentioned above states, “You are a quiet intellectual who enjoys spending nights in…gazing out windows perhaps? You are exhausted with the use of the term ‘introvert.’ You may or may not be pursuing an unrequited love interest. And the object of that love interest is probably sunflowers.” More seriously, individuals attracted to Starry Night usually have a keen eye for decorating and are skilled at creating art themselves. Does this sound like you?
The Scream by Edvard Munch
If The Scream is your favorite piece of artwork, you are someone worth getting to know. Complex and often misunderstood, you have a heart of gold and can truly see the good in everyone and everything. Those who display The Scream in their home are not afraid of standing out from the crowd and making a statement. Does this ring true?
Portraits by Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo’s portraits do not have as much widespread popularity as the other works of art mentioned here, but they certainly hold their own in the art world and in the hearts of Frida’s fans. The Huffington Post staff wrote, “You (who prefer Kahlo’s portraits) have extravagant style, a dominant speaking voice and an impetuous attitude overall. You utter the words ‘Why Not?’ more than the average individual. If faced with the decision of which pet to buy, your brain goes straight to monkey.” Is this accurate?
More than likely your favorite piece of art is not represented here. You can still analyze yourself by it. Take about 5 minutes to study the art piece as though you were a surgeon. Notice things about it that you never have before. In doing so you will also discover aspects of yourself you may have been previously unaware of.
