If you had to choose a color of the year for 2016, what would it be? Everyone has his or her own ideas about what colors are the most beautiful. Nature lovers would probably say green should be 2016’s color. Ask a little girl and she’d likely exclaim, “Sparkle!” And, just about any eclectic soul would say there’s no way to choose just one color of the year.
The spotlight is on you, dear reader. What color would YOU choose for 2016?
According to CNN’s Todd Leopold, 2016’s color of the year is a blend of two separate shades: Rose Quartz and Serenity. Well, actually it was Pantone, the color experts, who decided on the color. According to Leopold, Serenity is a “kind of baby blue” shade, and Rose Quartz a dusty pink.
Aren’t pale pink and light blue sort of…well…nursery colors? Is there an unusually high number of women expecting children to be born in 2016? What made Pantone choose these particular hues to comprise 2016’s color of the year? Pantone said that the choice is symbolic, “a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.” The color choice was made after Pantone surveyed a healthy amount of pop culture and fashion, reports Leopold.
While Rose Quartz and Serenity are not necessarily unusual hues, 2016 is the first year in which two shades were blended into one solo color. In past years, one color alone stood as the center of attention. Succulent shades such as Radiant Orchid, Emerald, and Tangerine Tango are past award winners.
Why, again, were pink and blue (ahem, Serenity and Rose Quartz), chosen to create this year’s blended shade? Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone’s executive director, explained, “As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colors that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent.”
Leopold made the point that the two shades “suggest the ‘gender blur’ of modern fashion.”
Pantone commented, “Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.”
Order and peace in 2016 – we certainly hope that is a prophetic statement. Only time will tell.
