Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) was a French artist who founded the Orphism movement known for strong colors and geometric shapes. He is best known for his bold use of color and experiments with tone and depth. He was also labeled a divisionist for his use of large tiles to construct small but symbolic works. Along with fellow artists Metzinger, George Seurat, and Paul Signac, their works are considered part of a Neo-impressionism which started in France. Delaunay’s later works are more abstract with nonfigurative paintings that still had the characteristics of brilliant colors and felt dynamic. Our Robert Delaunay pattern set contains a broad collection of his works showing his most recognized works including Portrait de Metzinger, Tour Eiffel, The Towers of Laon, Color Explosion, Circular Forms, Simultaneous Windows in the City, Endless Rhythm, St. Severin, and Nu à la coiffeuse. There’s also a self portrait of Robert Delaunay.

A sunset (also referred to as a sundown) is the daily disappearance of the sun below the horizon. When the sun is high in the sky, the path of light through the atmosphere is shorter allowing for more bluish colors to be visible. At sunrise and sunset, the path of the light through the atmosphere is longer which removes the bluish colors and shows more orange and red hues. Also sunset colors are usually more brilliant than sunrise colors, because the air in the evening contains more particles than in the morning. Volcanic eruptions and high altitude clouds can also enhance the colors in a sunset. Finally, a green flash at sunset can be seen at sunrise and sunset for just a second or too. Our Sunset Hues patterns are created from a selection of photographs which show sunsets over beaches, lakes, forests, skylines, and silhouetted behind trees.

Thomas Doughty (1793 – 1856) was an American painter of the Hudson River School, a movement of landscape artists living in New York whose artistic vision was greatly influenced by romanticism. Thomas Doughty is best known for his landscapes, painted at time where Americans were being more interested in them. Our pattern set for Thomas Doughty contains many examples of his works containing distant mountains, cloudy skies, forests, lakes and rivers, with an occasion building, human figure, and animal included. The patterns include Ruins in a Landscape, In the Catskills, White Mountains New Hampshire, Maine Seacoast, View of the Fairmount Waterworks, Scituate Beach Massachusetts, Landscape after Ruisdael, and View on the St. Croix River near Robbinston.

Barns are agricultural buildings located in farmlands. Their uses are varied – housing livestock, storing crops and equipment, and providing a covered work space. Barns have been traditionally painted red for many centuries, a custom which has unknown origins. Some theories attempt to explain this by suggesting that farmers added blood of a recently slaughtered animal to the linseed oil used for paint. Another theory is that farmers added rust to the old as a way to kill off moss and mold. When paint became more available, farmers choose red as a way to honor the traditional. Barns are sometimes painted in a whitewash if the cost of the paint is a factor. Our pattern set of Barns are based on some creative photographs showing these structures in various lighting and weather conditions. These weathered barns are shown back dropped against clear and cloudy skies with crop fields, grassy pastures, wooded fences, country roads, and horses nearby.

Soren Emil Carlsen (1853 – 1932) was a Danish born American impressionist painter best known for his still lifes. His paintings are beautifully crafted with a focus on pastel tones. Emil focused on the ideal beauty and the beauty within the subject. His favorite objects to paint included cermaic jugs, copper pans, fruits, vegetables, and even dead fish The placement of objects within the scene is very important as large shapes are juxtaposed with small ones and outlines are often united in harmonious curves. In his later years he produced some wonderful natural scenes of ocean scenes. We’ve included many examples of his works including Study in Gray, Ruby Reflections, Peonies, Still life with Fish, Girl with a Violin, Moonlit Seascape, Crashing Waves, Copper and Porcelain, Still Life with Apples, Afternoon Sunlight, Bald Head Cliff, and Quarry Wall.

Horses are large four footed animals that have been domesticated for thousands of years. Their well-developed sense of balance allows them to flee from predators and also sleep while standing up. Humans and horses interact in both sporting events and work activities. Horses exhibit a diverse array of coat colors and distinctive markings and also have distinguishing colored markings This pattern set is filled with patterns showing a diverse set of horse breeds in nature settings where their beauty is complemented with natural surroundings of open fields, colorful mountains, plateaus, and grass lands back dropped with both clear blue and cloudy skies.
