Giotto di Bondone - Father of European Painting

Giotto di Bondone (1266? - 1337) was an early Italian Renaissance Painter and Architect from Florence. Giotto made a radical break from the Byzantine (abstract - anti-naturalistic) style and brought more life to art. Giotto primarily painted Christian themes depicted in cycles and is best known for his frescos in various Chapels (Arene Chapel, Florence Cathedral, Assisi, Scrovegni). Our pattern set collection features many of his more familiar works including the Ognissanti Madonna, The Mourning of Christ, The Marriage at Cana, The Mourning of St. Francis, Crucifixion and Madonna and Child.

Camille Corot - French Landscape Artist

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875) was a French Landscape painter who had a strong influence on Impressionism. Corot was the leading painter of the Barbizon school of France in the mid-nineteenth century and his landscape style referenced a neo-classical style with a muted color palette. Many forgeries of Corot were created in the period 1870-1939, mostly because of his easy to imitate style. Our pattern set includes many examples of landscapes and portraits. You'll find Woman with a Pear, The Bridge at Narmi, Meditation, Orpheus Leading Eurydice, Interrupted Reading, Recollections of Mortefontaine, A Windmill in Montmartre, The Letter, Aqueducts in the Roman Campagna, Temple of Minerva Medica, Agostina, and Castel Gandolfo. There are also several self portraits.

Nicolas Poussin - French Classical Painter

Nicolas Poussin (1594 - 1665) was a French classical painter. His style consists of clarity, logic, and order, and favors line over color. He is considered the greatest French artist of the 17th century and one of the founders of European classicism which has its roots in antique and Renaissance heritage. Many of his works show an authoritative interpretation of ancient history and Greek and Roman mythological figures as well as biblical scenes. Our collection of patterns includes two self portraits, the set of his Four Seasons paintings, and a wide cross section of other pieces. These include Adoration of the Golden Calf, Nymph Syrinx Pursued by Pan, Ideal Landscape, Israelites Gathering Manna, The Judgement of Solomon, and A Dance to the Music of Time.

Bartolom Esteban Murillo - Spanish Baroque Painter

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617-1682) was a Spanish Baroque painter who painted scenes of everyday life in seventeenth century Seville, Spain. He also painted many religious themes including the Annunciation, Madonna and Child, and the Immaculate Conception. In the centuries after his death, he had a great reputation in Europe (even more so than Velázquez) and considered the last great painter of the Spanish Golden Age. Murillo's paintings bridge the dark simplicity of Spain's early Baroque artists and the sensuality of the approaching Rococo era. Our collection of patterns includes a wide selection of his art including A Girl and Her Duenna, Beggar Boys eating Grapes and Melon, The Flower Girl, St. Lesmes, The Little Fruit Seller, Young Boys Playing Dice, and a self portrait.

Hugo van der Goes - Flemish Painter

Hugo van der Goes (c. 1440 - 1482-83) was a Flemish painter best known for his Portinari Altarpiece in which he depicts the adoration of the shepherds. The work is in the form of a Triptych (three hinged panels) and is the largest Netherlandish work that could be seen in Florence at the time. He was a master in the painter's guild in the city of Ghent and is considered the greatest Netherlandish painter of the second half of the 15th century for both his masterful handling of oil painting and psychological depiction of individuals in his scenes. Our set contains most of his works including The Fall of Man, The Adoration of the Shepherd, The Calvary Triptych, The Monforte Altarpiece, and The Lamentation of Christ.

Henry Ossawa Tanner - Influential Black American Artist

Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859 - 1937) was an African American artist who was influential around the world with his art style. He was born in Philadelphia and schooled in fine arts. Although he first tried to set up a photography studio in Atlanta, he subsequently left the US and moved to Paris where he attempted to gain artistic acceptance. He was quickly introduced to new artworks and artists, and studied under renowned artists. While his early works, such as were concerned with everyday life as an African American, his later paintings focused mainly on the religious subjects for which he is now best known. Our pattern collection includes many of his most recognized pieces including The Banjo Lesson, The Annunciation, Sand Dunes at Sunset, Atlantic City, Gateway, Tangier, Booker T. Washington, Flight into Egypt, and The Resurrection of Lazarus.

William Hogarth - English Pictorial Satirist

William Hogarth (1697-1764) was an English artist, printmaker, engraver, and satirist. He is credited with the concept of sequential art. His works cover a wide range of topics including realistic portraits, comic-like strips, political satire, and historical art. He made several series of moral works including A Harlot's Progress, Rake's Progresses, and Marriage à-la-mode which is considered to be his finest work. Our collection of patterns includes a wide cross section of his works including two Self Portraits, The Shrimp Girl, The Roast Beef of Old England, An Election Entertainment, David Garrick and His Wife, David Garrick as Richard III, The Enunciation, and Portrait of Captain Thomas Coram.

Sir Henry Raeburn - Scottish Portrait Painter

Sir Henry Raeburn (1756 -1823) was a successful Scottish portrait painter who lived in Edinburgh. His works are characterized by strong characterization, stark realism, and dramatic lighting effects. He typically employed clashing color combinations, and a course modeling technique. Our pattern set includes many of his portraits, including his most recognized work, The Skating Minister. Other portraits include Boy and Rabbit, Alexander Ranaldson MacDonell of Glengarry, Sir Walter Scott, Mrs. Robert Scott Moncrieff, and Sir John Sinclair. There is also a self portrait included in the set.

Piero della Francesca - Early Renaissance Artist

Piero della Francesca (c.1415 - 1492) was a painter of the Early Renaissance who was also known as a painter and geometer. His works are characterized by humanism, geometry and perspective. Most of his works were religious based and he is best known for the cycle of frescoes in The Legend of the True Cross in the church of San Francesco in the Tuscan town of Arezzo. Our collection of patterns contains many of his most well known pieces including several from The Legend of the True Cross, The Baptism of Christ, and several pieces from Montefeltro Altarpiece, the Diptych Portrait of Battista Sforza and Federico da Montefeltro, and the Polyptych of Saint Augustine.

Gilbert Stuart - American Portrait Painter

Gilbert Stuart (1755 - 1828) was an American Painter from Rhode Island who was a prolific portrait painter. He painted portraits of over 1000 people including the first six presidents of the United States as well as many political and social figures of the times. His most famous portrait is The Athenaeum, an unfinished work of President George Washington. He was praised for the vitality and naturalness of his portrait, and painted directly to the canvas without the aid of sketches, a novel approach for the time. Our collection of Gilbert Stuart patterns includes all of his portraits of US presidents (George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and John Quincy Adams), and other well known individuals (Daniel Webster, John Jay, Samuel Meeker, John Trumbull, Abigail Smith Adams, Peter Gansevoort, The Skater (Portrait of William Grant), Mrs. Richard Yates, and Joshua Reynolds). There's also a self portrait included.

Katsushika Hokusai - Creative Japanese Artist

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a Japanese artist of the Edo period. He is best known for the woodblock print series, thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji which includes his most recognizable work, The Great Wave off Kanagawa. He was first trained with ukiyo-e, a style of wood block prints and paintings. Later Hokusai explored other styles of art, including European styles he was exposed to through French and Dutch copper engravings. He mastered Surimono, an experimental genre of Japanese woodblock print. At the high of his career, he created the Hokusai Manga a collection of sketches of various subjects including landscapes, flora, and fauna as well as the thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji set, his most defining set. In his later years, he produced One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji which was another significant landscape series. Our collection of Hokusai patterns includes many from the Thirty-six View collection and a number of other pieces he is known for including Dragon, Carp Leaping up a Cascade, The strong Oi Pouring Sake, and Portrait of a Woman holding a Fan.

Henri Fantin-Latour - French Floral and Portrait Painter

Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) was a French painter best known for his floral paintings and portraits. Although friends with several famous impressionist painters, Fantin-Latour remained a conservative and realistic artist throughout his life. The famous artist James McNeill Whistler brought attention to Fantin in England, where his still-lives sold so quite well. Ironically his works were virtually unknown in his native France. He married a fellow painter, Victoria Dubourg, and died of Lyme disease in 1875. Our set of Fantin-Latour contain many examples of his floral paintings in still life renderings of flowers, roses, and fruit. There are also numerous portraits including Marie-Yolande de Fitz James, Duchess Fitz James, Charlotte Dubourg, Two Sisters, Adolphe Jullien, Mr. and Mme Edwards, and several self-portraits.
