Émile Bernard – French Symbolist Painter

Émile Bernard (1868-1941) was a French Post-Impressionist painter who is associated with the Cloisonnism and Synthetism art movements. Émile was friends with other influential artists of the period including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gaugin, and Vincent van Gogh who jointly influenced each other. In 1891 he joined a group of Symbolist painters that included Odilon Redon and Ferdinand Hodler. Symbolist is a movement that is a reaction against realism and naturalism and emphasized spirituality, imagination, and dreams. Bernard’s style of painting involved bold forms and dark contours and some geometric tendencies in an effort to simplify nature. Franz Marc – German Expressionist Painter

Franz Marc (1880 – 1916) was a German Impressionist Painter who was a founding member of the Der Blaue Reiter. This journal included group of artists who formed an expressionism movement in Germany. Most of work involves animals in natural settings as a subject matter, and is characterized by bright primary colors in a cubist style. His works show a strong sense of emotion. His use of color forms a predictable pattern: the color blue was used to portray masculinity and spirituality, yellow was used to represent feminine joy, and red was used to indicate the sound of violence. In his later years, during World War 1, Marc enlisted in the German army and was involved with military camouflage. Our set of Franz Marc patterns includes many of his animal images including Blue Horse 1, The Large Blue Horses, Dead Deer, The Yellow Cow, Blue Black Fox, The Waterfall, Siberian Sheepdogs, Animals in a Landscape, Mandrill, Two Horses in Front of a Red Rock, and The Little Blue Horses. George Romney – English Portrait Painter

George Romney (1734-1802) was an English portrait painter who painted many society figures of his day. Many of his paintings featured his muse, Emma Hamilton, in various poses depicting historical and mythological figures. One of his early paintings, The Death of General Wolfe-Study, was entered into a Royal Society of Arts competition, but was questioned for being too contemporary. This caused Romney to ignore the Society for the rest of career, despite being asked to exhibit there after he became successful. Our pattern collection for George Romney contains many of his well known portraits including John Forbes, Major General Sir Archibald Campbell, Elizabeth Dutches-Contess of Sutherland, Charles Lennox, Miss Kirkpatrick, Miss Juliann Willoughby, Sir Christopher and Lady Sykes, Mrs Anne Carwardine and Her Eldest Son, Mrs Henrietta Morris and her Son, and John Walter Tempest with a Horse. Masaccio – Early Renaissance Painter

Masaccio (1401-1428) was a painter of the early Italian Renaissance. He is considered the best painter of his time because of his skill at recreating lifelike figures and movements as well as a feeling of 3 dimensions. He profoundly influenced the art of painting in the renaissance and directed the art style away from Gothic art to a more humanistic world. He had a brief life span of only 26 years. One of his early works, San Giovenale Triptych shows signs of portraying a 3D effect by foreshortening of some forms and portrays volumetric figures. Another well known piece, The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, had an impact on other painters including Michelangelo. Amedeo Modigliani – Italian Modern Painter

Amedeo Modigliani (1884 – 1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor who lived mostly in France. He is best known for his portraits and nudes with a characteristic style of elongated faces and figures. He achieved little success during his life, but after his death his works became very popular and were sold for high prices. He is known to have painted from a very early age and was indulged by his mother to continue in that profession. Our Modigliani pattern set includes many of his well known portraits including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Jeanne Hébuterne, Madame Kisling, Maude Abrantes, Chaim Soutine, Leopold Zborowski, Young Redhead in an Evening Dress, Gypsy Woman with Baby , The Little Peasant, Bride and Groom , and Beatrice Hastings. Robert Delaunay – French Abstract Artist

Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) was a French artist who founded the Orphism movement known for strong colors and geometric shapes. He is best known for his bold use of color and experiments with tone and depth. He was also labeled a divisionist for his use of large tiles to construct small but symbolic works. Along with fellow artists Metzinger, George Seurat, and Paul Signac, their works are considered part of a Neo-impressionism which started in France. Delaunay’s later works are more abstract with nonfigurative paintings that still had the characteristics of brilliant colors and felt dynamic. Our Robert Delaunay pattern set contains a broad collection of his works showing his most recognized works including Portrait de Metzinger, Tour Eiffel, The Towers of Laon, Color Explosion, Circular Forms, Simultaneous Windows in the City, Endless Rhythm, St. Severin, and Nu à la coiffeuse.
