Emil Carlsen - Still Life Master

Soren Emil Carlsen (1853 - 1932) was a Danish born American impressionist painter best known for his still lifes. His paintings are beautifully crafted with a focus on pastel tones. Emil focused on the ideal beauty and the beauty within the subject. His favorite objects to paint included cermaic jugs, copper pans, fruits, vegetables, and even dead fish The placement of objects within the scene is very important as large shapes are juxtaposed with small ones and outlines are often united in harmonious curves. In his later years he produced some wonderful natural scenes of ocean scenes. We’ve included many examples of his works including Study in Gray, Ruby Reflections, Peonies, Still life with Fish, Girl with a Violin, Moonlit Seascape, Crashing Waves, Copper and Porcelain, Still Life with Apples, Afternoon Sunlight, Bald Head Cliff, and Quarry Wall.

John Singer Sargent - American Portrait Painter

John Singer Sargent (1856 - 1925) was a leading portrait painter of his time. Although his parents were US citizens, they left the country a few years before John was born. John was a nomadic expatriate for much of his life. His family resided in Paris but frequently traveled throughout Europe. Through the influence of his artistically talented parents, and studies at both the Academy of Florence and École des Beaux-Arts, as well as private training with several artists in Paris, John's talents as a painter were developed. His early subject matters were landscapes; however he was influenced by his mentor, Carolus-Duran, to do portraits. Of the more than 900 oil paintings, and 2000 watercolors, our collection of patterns contains a subset of 47 well known works. These include: Spanish Dancer, Lady Agnew of Lochnaw, Frederick Law Olmsted, The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit, Morning Walk, Theodore Roosevelt, Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose, Robert Louis Stevenson, and John D. Rockerfeller.

Albrecht Drer - Northern Renaissance Master

Albrecht Dürer (1471 - 1528) was a German artist from Nuremberg. He is generally regarded as the greatest painter of the Northern Renaissance (in Europe, outside of Italy). His talents included the use of paints, woodcuts, engraving, and watercolors. He introduced classical themes in his works and applied many theories of mathematics, perspective, and ideal proportions. He influenced a great number of painters in succeeding generations. Our collection of Albrecht Dürer patterns includes several self portraits and many examples of his styles including Saint Jerome in His Study, Knight, Death, and the Devil, Melencolia, Young Hare, Adam and Eve, Praying Hands, Great Piece of Turf, and many portraits including Oswolt Krel, Hieronymus Holzschuher, Barbara Dürer, Bernhard von Reesen, Emperor Sigismund, and Elsbeth Tucher.

Francisco Zurbarn - The Spanish Caravaggio

Francisco Zurbarán (1598 - 1664) was a Spanish Painter who is primarily known for his religious oriented works of art which were depicted using a realistic style called chiaroscuro (contrasting light and dark areas).. The set title lays reference to the Italian painter Caravaggio who also excelled at chiaroscuro. Another characteristic in Zurbarán’s paintings is his renditions of drapes and robes. His subjects were usually a single figure of a religious theme. Our pattern set includes most of his most recognized works including Christ and the Virgin in the House of Nazareth, Saint Francis, The Death of St. Bonaventure, St. Apollonia, Madonna with Child, L'Annonciation, Agnus Dei ,Saint Serapion, Saint Rufina, The Young Virgin, and St. Casilda of Burgos. There is also a self-portrait included.

Édouard Manet (1832 - 1883) was a 19th century French Painter who helped inspire the transition from Realism to Impressionism. His two paintings "The Luncheon on the Grass" and "Olympia" are considered watershed paintings that marked the beginning of modern art. Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775 - 1851) was a controversial English landscape painter. His eccentric style matched his subjects - shipwrecks, fires, natural catastrophes, as well as natural phenomena such as sunlight, storms, rain, and fog. The significance of light to Turner resembled God's spirit. In his later paintings he concentrated on the play of light on water and the radiances of skies and fires, almost to an Impressionistic style. Jean Désiré Gustave Courbet (1819 - 1877) was a French painter who led the Realist movement which bridged the Romantic and Impressionist movements. Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins (1844-1916) was an American painter who is best known for his realistic depictions of the male body. Eakins's quest for realism led him to study anatomy and apply his research to creating works with dark lighting and realistic depictions. He endured much public scorn in his early years for his obsession with the male figure, however was recognized as a great master towards the end of his life. Our pattern set includes a self portrait, several sculling and wrestling scenes. His most recognized works including The Swimming Hole, The Gross Clinic, Baby at Play, and The Agnew Clinic are also included.
