Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) was a German-American landscape painter. He achieved fame by joining several trips of the Westward Expansion and painting the vast landscapes in a style known as luminism, characterized by glowing lights and a romantic mood. Although criticized for using enormous canvases and exaggerated lighting and coloring, his paintings were popular in their day, providing many viewers with a glance of the newly accessible American West. Our set of Albert Bierstadt patterns contains many works showing various landscape scenes including In the Sierras, Yosemite Valley, Call of the Wild, Seal Rock, Pikes Peak, Elk, The Coming Storm, Rocky Mountain Sheep, and San Francisco Bay.

On January 7, 1830, Albert Bierstadt was born in Solingen, Germany. Just one year later, his family moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts. It was here that he began to take an interest in art. This was made apparent by the "clever crayon sketches" he would create as a young child.

When Bierstadt was about 21 years old, he tried his hand at oil painting and found that he wanted to pursue art. In 1853 he traveled back to Germany, this time to Dusseldorf, to study art with distinguished painters
